Denmark threatens to take a day off from its citizens

The Danish government’s proposal prompted thousands of people to protest.

Thousands of people gathered on the streets of Copenhagen on Sunday to oppose the government’s proposal to renounce the saint.

The Danish government is proposing to remove one day off from the calendar to improve the country’s productivity.

Prime minister of the country Mette Frederiksen has also hinted that the funds saved from the holiday could be used to increase the country’s defense budget.

Representatives of numerous trade unions participated in the protest.

Citizens opposed Store Bededaging, i.e. changing the big day of prayer from a public holiday to a weekday. Prayer Day is celebrated on the fourth Friday after Easter.

The day has been a holiday in Denmark since 1686.

According to the trade unions, at least 50,000 people were present. The police did not give their estimate of the number of participants.
