Wear a sweater and turn down the heat

Norfolk County is encouraging residents to put on a sweater and turn down their thermostats on Thursday.

February 2 is National Sweater Day and the county is calling on all residents to help raise awareness about energy conservation and climate change.

“Heating is the single largest use of energy in most homes and makes up about 50 per cent of a homeowner’s energy bill,” Michael Simoes, the county’s director of facilities, said in a statement. “Turning down your thermostat and putting on a sweater is a simple, no-cost action residents can easily do to reduce their heating costs and combat climate change.

“Participating in National Sweater Day demonstrates Norfolk’s commitment to address and adapt to climate change.”

Norfolk will turn down the thermostats at county facilities on Thursday. Residents are being asked to turn their thermostats down by 1.5 C.

County staff and residents are being encouraged to take photos of themselves wearing their favorite sweater and sharing them on social media.

More than a million Canadians have bundled up for National Sweater Day since 2010 to promote conservation of fossil fuels including those used to heat homes.
