Artificial nerve cells that can be operated into the body may become part of future healthcare. It’s about “hacking” the body’s systems and sending signals that cause it to heal itself.
The artificial nerve cell, whose real name is the artificial neuron, is manufactured by researchers at Linköping University. So far, they have operated on an artificial nerve cell in a mouse and connected it with a nerve that runs from the brain to important organs. Among other things, the researchers were able to regulate the heart rhythm of the mouse.
– If we can regulate heart rhythm, then maybe we can regulate other things. For example, inflammation, says Peder Olofsson, research leader for bioelectronic medicine at the Karolinska Institutet.
