A student in Tennessee has a broken hand, so his classmates are developing a prosthesis for him.
The student has the problem that his hand is not properly trained and therefore he cannot use the hand properly. He also explains himself that he is quite embarrassed about the situation and his hand.
We have included the CBS video here for you. Here you can take a look at the hand prosthesis and how it is used.
Classmates build a working prosthesis using a 3D printer
In the first days of school, the 15-year-old didn’t want to show his deformed hand.
In the first days of school I really felt like I had to hide my hand. As if nobody would ever find out.
However, a teacher in the school’s engineering program found out and said they might be able to help. So three classmates got together and developed a prosthesis for him. They used online material and a 3D printer.
With the prosthesis, the 15-year-old was able to catch a baseball with his right hand for the first time. He himself says:
“The first time I caught it everyone freaked out because it was the first time I had caught a ball with my hand in 15 years. (…) You have changed my life.”

Many users see great potential in 3D printers
On reddit, some explain that they see great potential in such 3D printers in the future. Because that way you don’t have to put $50,000 in prostheses from any medical companies that would benefit from the problems. As someone writes, “If I sold prosthetic hands for $60,000, I would be concerned.”
Other companies go a little further and at least try to make your hands “less important”. A company presented a mouse that you can control with your thoughts. And that’s just one of many crazy ideas developers come up with to make their hobby more enjoyable for gamers.
And the large furniture group IKEA now also offers hands in its range that at least hold things for you, but cannot replace them:
