This is how crisis preparedness works in Finland

After the Cold War, Sweden dismantled large parts of both its military and civilian defense. However, Finland never discounted the threat from the east and maintained its crisis preparedness. This is where many Swedish eyes are directed, while an investigation is now underway into how, among other things, the emergency stocks in Sweden are to be rebuilt.

A truck full of wheat arrives at the silo in Turenki, halfway between Helsinki and Tampere. One of many small, but important links in Finland’s crisis preparedness, and thus also in total defence.

Right now both the security situation in Europe and the food supply after Ukraine’s production has been shut down are worrying.

When Sweden is now rebuilding its crisis preparedness, one of Finland’s most important pieces of advice is to have close cooperation with the companies.

And that’s exactly how it works around grain, the Supply Preparedness Center owns nothing, but instead contracts with the agricultural companies to keep enough in stock. Among other things, in the silo in Turenki, but similar facilities can be found all over the country, also with petrol and medical supplies.
