Iivo Niskanen flew violently into the net fence in the freestyle skiing World Cup competition in Les Rousses on Friday. On Saturday morning, Niskanen opened up about his condition to Urheilu when he was testing his traditional skis.
– Surprisingly ok. Of course, it’s only been a while, Niskanen joked in the video before moving forward with a steady push.
A journalist who followed Niskanen’s training Kimmo Porttila told more about Niskanen’s situation on Urheilustudio’s broadcast.
– When Niskanen’s leg somehow got caught between the nets, it was unclear what happened to him. I got a message from Iivo in the morning that the leg is tender from the bruises, but surprisingly ok, Porttila said on the broadcast.
Niskanen arrived at the finish line in the 10 km race as the second last, almost three and a half minutes behind the leader. Niskanen said after the race that his skis slipped from the ice in a U-bend, which is why he went towards the net fence.
– I was close to losing my leg on it. It took me a long time to get out of there. Fortunately, I was able to ski to the finish line. I’ll probably survive on some kind of stilt, Niskanen guessed on Friday.
Niskanen’s season has been difficult, as he was unable to open his World Cup season in Ruka due to corona infection. He skied two races at the Tour de Ski and retired for a training break.
On Sunday, a 20-kilometer traditional skiing joint start will be skied in Les Rousses.
Correction at 12:35: Corrected Iivo Niskanen’s comment. Niskanen said “Of course, Tasuria has just gone”, and not “Tasuria must go”, as the story originally read.
