To help get their wheels rolling on a late January weekend, dozens of kids and their families took part in an annual scouting tradition at the WISH Center on Saturday.
Starting in the morning, more than 30 participants competed in the Kub Kar Rally, with about 40 more taking part in the trucks, rails and dragster categories later in the day.
The popular event went on hiatus during the pandemic, before returning last year. However, that rally took place in April, later than usual due to the COVID-19 measures in effect that January.
“The numbers are coming back,” organizer Dave Elliott said of the attendance, noting he helped get the leaders involved in raising awareness.
The rally was free of charge to enter, with Charron Transport sponsoring it.
Awards were presented to participants for speed, design, originality and finish. However, Elliott said the main goal is to promote teamwork and sportsmanship.
“Kids need stuff to keep them busy,” he said. “It’s a fun activity. Everybody loves it. … We’re starting to get the word out and starting to do more activities.”
Elliott also hopes to bring the regional rally to Chatham-Kent next year, saying it involves some preparation.
“We’re still discussing how we’re going to make it happen,” he said, adding the local group has the experience to make the event a success.
“My leaders are really awesome. They all make me look good. They really do.”
