Great numbers, great reviews: The Last of Us season 2 is well deserved
Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have been riding a hype wave since the launch of their horror series. Fans and critics are enthusiastic, with Moviepilot The Last of Us is currently getting one rating of 8.8 and thus moves in the spheres of Game of Thrones. The viewer numbers are also correct: since 2010 was only one HBO series premiere more successful: The Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon
The Last of Us is set in the year 2023. Approximately 2 decades ago, a pandemic caused by a mutated fungus (Ophiocordyceps unilateralis) killed billions of people. Texan Joel (Pedro Pascal) survived. He roams the post-apocalyptic environment to bring 14-year-old Ellie (Bella Ramsey) from a military-controlled quarantine zone to a resistance group.
And the rough plot for season 2 is also already certain.

Craig Mazin said before the series started that he didn’t like “filler episodes”. He doesn’t want to waste time and he loves the history of the games. Season 1 will use up the entire story of The Last of Us Part 1.
For me, the story of the first game is wonderful. It’s complete, it deserves a season, we know how to tell it within a season – so the question didn’t even arise. And I promise if we’re lucky shoot more seasons and tell the story we will continue to make sure each and every episode is worth the wait.
Mazin is highly unlikely to change stance. Accordingly, we can assume that Season 2 will fully immerse itself in the gameplay of Part 2.
Warning, spoilers: The Last of Us Part 2 takes place 5 years after the end of Part 1. Ellie and Joel have found sanctuary in a community of survivors. However, the harmony in the midst of the post-apocalypse is violently disrupted.
When is The Last of Us season 2 coming?
At worst, in two years. HBO has traditionally taken its time with its blockbuster series, and The Last of Us falls into that category. An advantage could be that the story is already roughly in place and only needs to be massaged into series format. Still, shooting and production will take a lot of time.
