Tons of garbage and plastic waste have accumulated on the surface of the part of the Drina River, which also passes through Serbia and Montenegro, in the city of Visegrad in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, also due to the rains in the region.
While the surface of the river near the Visegrad Hydroelectric Power Plant is covered with garbage due to heavy rainfall and melting snow every year, the garbage passes to Bosnia and Herzegovina via Serbia and Montenegro.
Dejan Furtula, President of the Visegrad “Eco Centar” Association, said in a statement to the AA correspondent, “(The waste accumulating on the river surface) There is no explanation for this. This is a real shame. This problem has been recurring for many years, but in the last 2-3 years, it has been seen in Visegrad. The amount of waste has increased a lot.” said.
Calling the authorities to duty, Furtula noted that citizens should not consider the river as a “garbage” and stated that plastic and wood pieces as well as vehicle parts and medical wastes were seen in the river.
“This is an environmental disaster in the literal sense of the word. I hope Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro will come up with a joint plan and ask the European Union for help. This problem must be resolved as soon as possible because it is really embarrassing for all of us,” said Furtula. he said. (AA)
