Giorgia Green, a 14-year-old autistic living in England, enjoyed spraying her favorite deodorant on the blankets in her room. According to her father, Paul Green, spraying the spray her mother used gave the autistic girl a sense of comfort. Unfortunately, this sedative practice resulted in Giorgia’s death on May 11, 2022. The 14-year-old girl reportedly had her heart stopped after inhaling aerosol deodorant.
SUDDEN HEART STOP CAUSES DEATH
The official coroner’s report of Giorgia’s death noted the outcome as unfortunate. The medical cause of death was “undetermined but consistent with aerosol inhalation.” Experts explain that this condition is not “the same thing” as a heart attack, detailing the sudden loss of heart function, breathing and consciousness from cardiac arrest. Sudden cardiac arrest without emergency medical treatment can cause death.
THE AMOUNT OF DEODORANT THAT IS STRESSED IS UNKNOWN
Warning signs of this emergency include sudden collapse, absence of a pulse, shortness of breath, and unconsciousness. Giorgia’s brother had found her unresponsive in her bedroom last May. His father told the BBC: “The door of his room was open, so the room where he was spraying deodorant was not like a closed environment. The exact amount of deodorant is not clear, but he would spray more than you would normally spray. At one point, his heart stopped as a result of his breathing.
THEY WANT THE WARNINGS OF DEODORANTS CHANGE
Deodorant manufacturers said in response that deodorants had “very clear warnings.” Most aerosol deodorants come with a warning that “can kill solvent abuse instantly.” But Giorgia’s parents said the summer was small and they believed many parents bought deodorant for their kids without realizing the warning. “People don’t know how dangerous the contents of those cans can be,” Baba said. Parents believe the warning should be changed to “solvent use can kill instantly” because Giorgia doesn’t abuse deodorant. According to the Office for National Statistics, “deodorant” was mentioned in 11 death certificates between 2001 and 2020.
