Anna Bassels in Tiana outside Barcelona suffers from endometriosis and for a few years now has very strong pains when she has her period.
– I felt weak and alone. What is wrong with me?, Anna says she used to ask herself.
Soon, Anna and all other Spaniards with severe menstrual pains will be able to get paid leave for three days a month. Parliament voted in favor in December and now the matter is with the Senate. If it goes through, Spain will be first in Europe.
The idea is to make it easier for those who are in so much pain that they cannot work. Avoid doctor’s visits every month, avoid taking sick days or vacation days or work despite the pain. And reduce the taboo around menstruation.
But the proposal is being debated again and critics believe that the reform is unnecessary and warn that it may disadvantage women in the labor market.
