On Thursday, the EU’s migration ministers gathered in the city of Arlanda outside Stockholm for the first informal council meeting under Sweden’s presidency. The issue of building a barrier along the Bulgarian-Turkish border was raised before the meeting by Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer was discussed. Several EU countries are under strong pressure due to the number of people seeking asylum or being smuggled into the Union. In Sweden, outside Arlanda, today the EU’s migration ministers discussed the situation and how to get countries to take back citizens who are not allowed to stay in the EU. Austria wants to see a fence on the border between Bulgaria and Turkey. Sweden, for its part, is lifting visa restrictions for more countries – so that they will take back citizens who have been denied asylum in the EU. Hear more in the player above.
