Environmental toxins and pharmaceuticals are found in Swedish otters, shows a new research report from the National Museum of Natural History. Among other things, samples have shown that one in three female otters has such high levels of PCBs, a banned chemical that can affect the female otters’ reproduction.
Various drugs have also been found in almost all otters that have been examined, including antibiotics and medication for migraines and schizophrenia.
– It is alarming, says Anna Roos, curator at the National Museum of Natural History, who participated in the surveys of Swedish otters.
