Already qualified, the Algerians beat Mozambique (0-1) and recorded a third success during this group stage. Despite their defeat, the Mozambicans are qualified and also join the quarter-finals. In the other Group A match, Libya, already eliminated, won their first victory against Ethiopia (3-1), who will not see the rest of the competition either.
It is a faultless course for the Algerian selection. Already guaranteed to play in the quarter-finals of CHAN 2023 following their victory against Ethiopia (1-0) on January 17, Madjid Bougherra’s men conclude the group stage with a third victory in three matches against Mozambique (0-1).
The Algerians quickly took control of the match thanks to the goal of central defender Hocine Dehiri (7th), effectively taking over the corner of his teammate Akram Djahnit to open the scoring. The Fennecs then multiplied the chances, especially in the second half, but without managing to increase the score. Above all, they overpowered a team from Mozambique, which only managed to target one shot in the entire game and which was too imprecise in the last gesture.
Despite this defeat, the Mozambicans finish in second place in the group and also join the quarter-finals of the competition where they will face the first team of group C. First in group A, the Algerian selection will face in the quarter-finals the team finishing in second place in group B.
A too late awakening for Libya
In the other Group A match, Libya dominated Ethiopia (3-1) and won for the first time in this 2023 edition. After Ethiopian Gatoch Panom opened the scoring on a penalty (0-1, 39th), the Libyans sounded the revolt by equalizing a few minutes later thanks to midfielder Ali Arqoub (1-1, 44th). Despite the domination of the Ethiopians in the second half, the Knights of the Mediterranean managed to score twice against the run of play, first shortly after the restart thanks to Abdulati Abbasi (2-1, 50th) then at the end of the match thanks to an achievement by Mohamed Saltou (3-1, 78th).
This start does not change anything for the Libyan selection, already eliminated from the competition after their defeats against Algeria (1-0) on January 13 and Mozambique (3-2) on January 17. Ethiopia finished in last place in Group A and also left the competition.
