Question-answer: SVT’s Diamant Salihu on the wave of violence in Stockholm

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

What must be done NOW to stop this?

– I just asked a police officer who is participating in this investigation to stop the wave of violence about this and received the answer that the police must focus more force on taking the leaders who instigate the crimes and not just the perpetrators, often young teenagers.

How do you think the view of violence and crime among young people should be broken?

– Anti-violence programs are tested in Rinkeby, for example, with ten-year-old students to give them better tools to deal with conflicts. Parents are also involved. It’s called acting together. See one documentary which I have been involved in doing on this subject.

Will it get worse before it gets better?

– It will take time, but it will work. If you can end war, you can end gang wars in Sweden.¨

Are only specific areas affected or does this happen in all city districts?

– Mainly so-called areas of exclusion, but I would say that the “gangster identity” is like a trend that has spread outside these areas – where the vast majority have been forced to live close to violence for many years without it being particularly noticed.

Wouldn’t it be easier to strip citizenship and deport?

– Some parents in violent areas, including those who have sons who are murderers, have said so – deport them. But many in this environment are young and born here, and thus a product of our common society.

What is the most shocking and inexplicable thing about this conflict that you have reported?

– That violations can lead to a wave of revenge that can cost the lives of many young men. And the lives of loved ones, because they are with men in these environments.

How many conflicts are going on in Stockholm right now? It was Einár connections around Christmas, right?

– The Einár connection is one of three red conflicts in Sthlm. But that conflict has parallel intrigues between different individuals. So you have to be open to several possible tracks, rather than locking yourself in with Einár. But that makes it somewhat easier to understand and keep up with as an outsider. We want to understand, even if it is difficult.

Isn’t it time to criminalize and incriminate the buyers even more?

– Drugs are a source of food for the gangs. And there the consumers are the sponsors of guns, bullets and explosives, according to criminals I interviewed.
