According to the AFP news agency, it is about four men, 13 women and six children. The messages come after their relatives in Canada sued the Canadian government and claimed that it is obliged to collect them if it wants to live up to the country’s Charter of Freedoms and Rights. In a specific court ruling on the men, it was ruled that they must also be returned.
Previously, only a small number of women and children, relatives of men who joined IS, have been brought home from Syria. The Canadian government emphasizes that each case is assessed individually in terms of when people can be picked up and the conditions for that.
According to the organization Human Rights Watch, it is assumed that another 30 Canadian citizens, including ten children, are still in the camps.
