He can neither train nor play matches with Frölunda.
Now the star player Johan Sundström breaks the silence about the club’s actions.
“It has come to my attention that there has been great interest in my situation,” he writes in an open letter.
2019 returned Johan Sundström home to Frölunda again after two seasons in the KHL with games in Avangard Omsk and Kunlun Red Star. But the return has not been at all what the star player had hoped for.
Frölunda’s message
After last season, Frölunda announced that the 30-year-old should leave the club and find a new team. Therefore, since May he has been allowed to train on his own and there have been rumors of other club addresses, but Sundström has not yet left Frölunda.

The SHL club still pays Sundström’s salary of around SEK 300,000 a month, according to information circulated in the Swedish media, but he is therefore neither allowed to play matches nor train with the Gothenburg team. The whole thing has developed into a very infected situation for everyone involved.

Sundström’s words
Sundström has won SM gold and three CHL titles with Frölunda, which is the only team he has represented in the SHL. In total, there have been a total of 322 games and 149 points for Frölunda in the top league, in 2016 the forward was also named the SM playoff MVP when Frölunda took home the gold.

Gold hero Johan Sundström has so far been silent during the season and has not commented on his precarious situation. But now the 30-year-old chooses to break the silence for once.
“It has come to my attention that there has been great interest in my situation and future. Of course, I think the situation regarding Frölunda’s decision is very sad. But I have accepted the situation, clenched my fist and want to come back even better. That is my objective.
I have continued my activities as an ice hockey player since May 2022, together in smaller groups and with, among others, Andreas Larsson, who conducts ice and physical training regularly.

I’m driving until further notice and waiting for a new journey with new opportunities. Where, when and how we will see in the future. Otherwise, I have no other comments at the moment,” writes Sundström in an email, according to the local newspaper GP.
Last season there were 15 points in 45 games for Frölunda, but so far this season there hasn’t been a single hockey game for Sundström. He has previously been rumored to league rival HV71 but the parties have not come to an agreement.
