The 2023 Australian Open saw Casper Ruud fall this Thursday. After the elimination of Rafael Nadal, the way opened up a little more for Novak Djokovic. On the French side, Caroline Garcia and Ugo Humbert continue the adventure…
Another big surprise at the Australian Open last night. After Rafael Nadal, reduced and eliminated in the second round the day before, the Norwegian Casper Ruud also fell this Thursday, January 19, losing to the American Jenson Brooksby (39th) 6-3, 7-5, 6 -7 (4/7), 6-2. Obviously having a bad day, the seeded n°2 saved four match points before cracking, paving the way a little more for Novak Djokovic in the tournament, where he is making a comeback, a year after his expulsion for his vaccination status, and where he hopes to win his 23rd Grand Slam title.
In the absence of Nadal, Ruud, but also the world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, it is hard to see who could stand in the way of the Serb now, except perhaps a great Stefano Tsitsipas. On the schedule for this Australian Open 2023, Novak Djokovic will face the Franco-Mauritian Enzo Couacaud in the coming hours while the Greek, 4th player in the world, will face the Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor.
In the men’s draw, we also note the victory of Andrey Rublev who will have left the third set to his Finnish opponent Emil Ruusuvuori (46th) before finally making the difference: 6-2, 6-4, 6-7 (2/ 7), 6-3.
Among the French, Garcia and Humbert still in the race
Among the French, Caroline Garcia qualified for the 3rd round this Thursday morning against the Canadian Leyla Fernandez. A key victory (6-7 (5), 5-7) for France’s most prominent player. Among the men, it also goes for Ugo Humbert who overcame the American Denis Kudla (6-2, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4).
It does not pass on the other hand for Jérémy Chardy who lost his match and his nerves against the Briton Daniel Evans (30th) 6-4, 6-4, 6-1. After a crucial point that eluded him in the first set and which may have turned the tide, the Frenchman accused the referee of “looking at the sky” instead of the game. A bullet had indeed come out of his pocket, which should logically have led to the cancellation of the exchange…
