Even before the MCU was born, the X-Men films showed how successful Marvel stories can be in cinemas. But what started out great in 2000 thanks to X-Men The Movie ended on a low in 2019 with X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Dark Phoenix – Trailer 3 (German) HD
Within the X-Men screen universe, Dark Phoenix was intended to complete the prequel series that began in 2011 with X-Men: First Class. The series is dedicated to the young mutants around Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Erik Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender). The film itself picks up on the comics’ acclaimed Dark Phoenix storyline, in which an overpowering Jean Gray (Sophie Turner) is directed against her comrades-in-arms.
But the grand finale of the prequel saga ended in fiasco. Critics as well as audiences hardly left a good hair on the film and particularly criticized the screenplay and a sometimes difficult to understand character development, the long-time friends suddenly turned into bitter enemies. You can find an overview of the reviews at Metacritic, among others.
The box office results of the film were correspondingly poor. According to Deadline, Dark Phoenix lost over 100 million US dollars and is therefore considered one of the biggest flops in film history. Historically, however, the film will remain significant: it marks the conclusion of the 20th Century Fox era for the X-Men, who are now part of the MCU following Disney’s takeover of the studio.
