Netflix documentary enrages fans over exploitation of main character
The axe-wielding hitchhiker follows Caleb McGillvary, who became an internet sensation after being interviewed in 2013. Apparently he had prevented a woman from being attacked with an axe. Shortly thereafter, however, it was revealed that he was connected to a New Jersey murder for which he has since been convicted (via Digital Spy). However, viewers of the documentary are now angry about how the Netflix film is handling McGillvary’s problems.

“I am so angry. Exploitative media bosses, no regard for mental illness and then allowed [McGillvarys] Mother also justify her abuse“, it says about. “The guy was obviously mentally ill and everyone wanted to exploit him quickly“, writes another fan. Another viewer explains: “He never had a chance.”
