We told you that Samsung is making rapid progress in developing microLED panels for smartwatches and that Apple will use them for its future Watch Series. Apple is considering partnering with LG on smartwatch displays with new microLED displays.
According to the reports, LG Display is said to have already established operations and produced small quantities of rear panels for microLED displays. Production will likely start in the second half of 2024, so the first Apple Watch with a microLED display is expected to arrive in 2025.
This contradicts Samsung’s latest report on microLED production, as analysts say LG’s rival’s screens arrive next year are breaking things down. It seems likely at the moment that Samsung will use the technology for the Galaxy Watch series before supplying its microLEDs to Apple. Also, Apple loves to diversify its supply chains, so it will want to strike deals with both companies and launch a microLED smartwatch in 2025.
The development of technology allows companies that compete with each other to develop joint projects over time. As with the smartphone, we will see Apple and Samsung face to face in smart watches.
