After a long wait, the Mazda MX-30 R-EV will be the first model to carry a Wankel engine after the RX-8.
The Wankel (Rotary) engine, which Mazda recently introduced in the RX-8, was heavily criticized for its negative aspects on a structural basis. Contrary to conventional motors, the working principle realized through the rotor inside allowed this motor to produce much more power than expected in compact volumes. The Japanese manufacturer, which has not made any statement about giving up Wankel in the intervening 10 years, on the contrary, has been working for a long time to use the engine in the new generation. Opening its doors today, the Brussels Motor Show is hosting the Mazda MX-30 R-EV, a tangible result of these efforts.

Our expectations of Mazda engineers to bring the Wankel engine to life in a hybrid combination are not wrong. Unlike the Renesis in the RX-8, the working principle of the MX-30 is not much different from Nissan’s e-Power system in the MX-30 lineup, where an 830cc engine is preferred. The gasoline engine, which will not physically transfer power to the wheels, will act as a generator for electric driving. The biggest detail that distinguishes the system developed by Mazda from Nissan is that the electrical infrastructure is rechargeable with a cable.
The main reason for this is that the battery capacity is 17.8 kWh. The MX-30 R-EV, which can cover a range of 85-90 kilometers with only this battery, will be able to stretch this value up to 650 kilometers with the support of the Wankel engine. The charging time of the batteries is given as 25 minutes from 20 percent to 80 percent over the 36 kW fast source. We see that Mazda has included a 50-liter petrol tank in the new lineup. The power values offered by the model to the users in the combination will be 167 horsepower and 260 Nm torque. The MX-30 R-EV, which is about 1,700 kilograms when all parts come together, will be able to offer an average consumption value of 1 liter in urban uses. For the MX-30 R-EV, which will be offered in Germany for a starting price of around 36,000 euros, the most expensive version will carry a 45,000 euro sticker.
