“They live on frozen gravel”

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Frida Karlsson has recently won the Tour de Ski and big prize money.
Now the Swede is doing the nice thing and donating some of the money back to sports.
– Many live on frozen gravel, says Falun-Borlänge chairman Johan Eriksson to SportExpressen about the nice gesture.

During the weekend it’s time for the annual Kopparskidan in Falun. But just this year it means a lot to win the competition when the national team stars Frida Karlsson and Maja Dahlqvist entered with money to increase the profit amount.

Together with national team colleague Dahlqvist, they have managed to raise the prize money in the Copper ski to a full 150,000 kroner spread over the six different races.
– There is no competition at the same level that has this prize money, says Johan Erikssonchairman of the organisers’ club Falun-Borlänge, to SportExpressen.

“Frozen Gravel”

However, the organizer does not want to reveal exactly how much money the national team riders contributed, but it is apparently a “substantial penny”. This will be a welcome addition to many skiers who have to struggle with the financial side of the sport they love.
– Many live on frozen gravel. They have nothing. I have spoken to several riders and their stories are not so fun to hear. There are 25-year-olds who live on their parents. They don’t want to do that and they shouldn’t do that, chairman Eriksson admits in the interview.

Karlsson and Dahlqvist are happy to help with the extra funding as they themselves remember how hard it was before they reached the national team and the World Cup, where the big money is.
– We have many friends out there who share our dreams of becoming the world’s best skiers – and want to be involved in ensuring that the next generation gets the conditions and steps towards the goals of their dreams, says Frida Karlsson in a statement.
