Johnny Depp’s career remains struggling but has seen worse days. Today, Wednesday, January 11, 2023, Minamata will finally be released in the WOW subscription. It’s the last movie that went into production before Depp’s public falling out with ex-wife Amber Heard.
On WOW: Johnny Depp uncovers an industrial waste scandal in Minamata
Director Andrew Levitas’ (Lullaby) bio-drama is based on disturbingly true events. In 1970s Japan, celebrated war photographer W. Eugene Smith uncovered an incredible injustice. An industrial group has there Waste containing mercury discharged into groundwater and wants to cover up the consequences with corruption and violence.
Minamata was shown at the Berlinale in February 2020, but due to the Depp Heard scandal it was only released in Europe in August 2021 and in the USA in early 2022. The criticism reacted with an average to positive echo (via Metacritic).
In addition to Depp are in the drama, among others Bill Nighy (Hot Fuzz), Tadanobu Asano (Thor) and Minami (Battle Royale) to see. It has a running time of 115 minutes.
