– I was informed of the find and was surprised to learn that government documents were in the office at all, President Joe Biden told reporters in Mexico City where he is for meetings with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The documents must be examined
Biden’s lawyers found the documents in November while cleaning out an office. They handed over the documents to the National Archives, which handles such material, according to Biden’s adviser Richard Sauber.
The Ministry of Justice is now set to examine the documents.
“The White House is cooperating with the National Archives and the Department of Justice,” Sauber said in a statement.
Must have been in a locked cabinet
Sauber has described it as “a small number of classified documents” found at the Penn Biden Center, a think tank linked to the University of Pennsylvania where Biden was previously an emeritus professor. According to the statement, the documents were in a locked cupboard.
In a raid on former President Donald Trump’s residence Mar-a-Lago in Florida in August, the FBI took more than 100 classified documents. That finding is also being reviewed by the Department of Justice.
