[Mis à jour le 8 janvier 2023 à 20h43] The disaster movie geostorm, released in 2017, is on the TV program this Sunday, January 8, 2023 on TF1. This feature film directed by Dean Devlin starts from the premise that satellites were invented to control the climate… until the day they begin to malfunction, causing disaster on Earth. But do such machines really exist? No, since the filmmaker had the idea for his screenplay during a discussion on climate change with his six-year-old daughter.

“The most natural thing in the world, she asked me why we couldn’t just make a machine to solve the problem, remembers the director of geostorm in remarks reported by Allociné. It gave me a whole bunch of ideas about what might happen if we actually built this kind of machine. What if it turns sour?” If there are no satellites responsible for controlling the climate, attempts to manipulate weather patterns have been undertaken by several States.

One of the most widespread techniques, the World Meteorological Organization tells us in August 2021, is that of cloud seeding, which tries to modify the amount or type of rain from clouds by sending from planes or the ground different substances, such as silver iodide. China, the United States or the United Arab Emirates are engaged in similar experiments to control the weather. However, the results are not always positive and these techniques have several risks, all the more so when the countries concerned are not prepared for sudden weather changes.

Synopsis – When satellites responsible for controlling the climate begin to fail, a designer must work hand in hand with his brother to save the world from a terrible storm…
