American alpine skier Mikael Shiffrin has risen from its soil Lindsey Vonn’s alongside as the female skier with the most World Cup wins of all time. Shiffrin won the giant slalom race in Kranjska Gora with a big margin of 77 hundredths.

First place is for Shiffrin in the 82nd World Cup. Vonn achieved her last victory in March 2018 in the Åre diving competition.

– I can’t help but spin my head. Unbelievable performance, Urheilu’s expert Kalle Palander glowed.

Palander believes that simply standing up for Shiffrin is not enough.

– She definitely wants to be better than Lindsey Vonn.

When men and women are added together, the all-time number one is Ingemar Stenmark. The Swedish legend has 86 number one positions.

A wild success

27-year-old Shiffrin has been at the top of alpine skiing for ten years. He achieved his first World Cup victory at the age of 17 in the slalom in Åre.

Slalom has been the woman’s biggest passion. In slalom, he has won a total of 51 World Cup races, making him the skier who has won the most in one alpine sport.

Shiffrin won four consecutive world slalom championships between 2013 and 2019. In addition to these, he has two other world championships.

Shiffrin has won Olympic gold once in slalom and giant slalom.

Shiffrin was in the best shape of his career in the 2018-2019 season, when he achieved no less than 17 World Cup first places. That’s the single-season record for wins.

Shiffrin’s last few years have been challenging. The father of an American born in 1995 died suddenly at the beginning of 2020. He has admitted in many interviews that the tragedy affected the sport. Last winter’s Beijing Winter Olympics ended in great disappointment as he crashed out in both the slalom and giant slalom.

This season, Shiffrin has returned to his top level. The victory was Shiffrin’s eighth of the season. He won four times in the slalom, three times in the giant slalom and once in the super giant slalom.
