A couple of thousand people took part in the first pride parade on the streets of the Indian capital New Delhi in three years.
The participants demonstrated for the legalization of same-sex marriage, an issue the country’s Supreme Court is due to take up in March, five years after India decriminalized homosexuality in 2018.
– That decision only focused on one aspect, but there is a bigger issue and that is that LGBTQ people do not have the same rights (as the rest of the population), says one of the parade participants, Ajay Chauhan, to the AFP news agency.
Should the HD rule in favor of the LGBTQ organizations protesting the current laws, India could become the second country in Asia to allow same-sex marriage, after Taiwan relaxed its legislation in 2019.
