Is 1899 season 1 worth it without a sequel?

1899 should have been the new Dark: the same creators, the same degree of mindfuck and also designed for 3 seasons. Instead, the sci-fi series succumbs Netflix’ current cancellation frenzy and will not extend beyond the existing 8-episode season 1.

Many sci-fi fans who had made a note of 1899 are now rightly asking whether the 1st season is still worthwhile. I have a definite answer to that.

Think movie endings like Blade Runner. To this day we still wonder if Deckard is a replicant or not. Many great films like The Thing From Another World, Inception, and Insidious end with big twists or burning questions while completing the main storyline.

If you approach the first and unfortunately last season 1899 with this attitude, you will have a lot of fun. Then the actual storywhat the crossing to America is all about, with all the mysterious figures on board, with the missing ship and the numerous other mysteries, is explained with great twists in a visually stunning and satisfying way.

I would have loved to see how the two 1899 creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar tell a perhaps completely different second season. 1899 ends on one Bang that I like to chew on.
