Driverless Tesla car escaped from police

Another new feature of Tesla has emerged. When the driver in the vehicle fell asleep, the driverless Tesla escaped from the police for 15 minutes.

The incident occurred on a highway near Bamberg, Germany, when police officers tried to pull the Tesla over for traffic control. There was no movement from either the driver or Tesla to stop. The police started to follow the vehicle while it was traveling at 110 kilometers per hour (68 miles per hour), and exactly 15 minutes later, the vehicle could come to a stop when the driver woke up.

While the chase was going on, police teams tried to stop the vehicle with horns but were unsuccessful. After about 15 minutes, the driver woke up and pulled his vehicle to the side of the road. According to a statement from Bamberg traffic police on December 29, the driver showed drug-like abnormalities during control and used something called a “steering wheel weight” in the footwell of the vehicle to make Tesla’s safety system believe his hands were on the wheel.

Tesla’s self-driving car feature is also under scrutiny. A German court has banned Tesla from using certain terms in its ads in 2020, including the use of the term Autopilot. The court found that identifying the feature as Autopilot gave people the impression that the technology could be used without human intervention.

A similar decision was made in the State of California. The court had banned Tesla from defining its software as Fully Self-Driving.
