MeinMMO editor Maik Schneider assumes that in a mirror universe in which mankind is already exploring distant parts of space, he is giving well thought-out orders somewhere as a spaceship captain. The popular Steam game Cosmoteer for €20 helps him with his daydreams.
Since I spend all day gaming, I always bring up new games on our couch. But this time it was my fiancee who gave me a little tip.
“That’s definitely something for you!” – I haven’t heard that often from Alicia in this context. So I bought it unseen and went straight in the next day.
After the first few seconds, I understood why the game Cosmoteer was worth recommending. I grabbed my Captains robe, set up the tech on the coffee table and settled into a little indie gem of building my own 2D Star Destroyer.
In the following lines I will explain what the game has to offer and for whom Cosmeteer is suitable. The trailer for the game is here:
Cosmeteer: “Warning: wannabe captain on the bridge”
What kind of game is this? Cosmoteer is a spaceship management game in which you complete quests and collect cash and resources to upgrade your spaceship or fleet.
You design the layout of the spaceships yourself, you have a wide range of tools, you can design colors, shapes and the technical components completely freely.
You also have to make sure that you have enough crew members to keep your equipment running on board.
With every mission, with every dismantled enemy ship, you collect more resources to get closer to your dream destroyer. There are hardly any limits to your imagination, except in perspective. Cosmoteer relies entirely on 2D graphics.
How does that go? You choose one of the inexpensive beginner designs to start with and the ship is already waiting for orders in front of a friendly space station.
Such space stations ensure your progress in the game:
You accept an order and follow the marker on the map. Most of the orders revolve around destroying pirates or exploring areas. On the way you will discover other POIs that are often worth exploring.
If you get too close to an enemy ship, attack it and hit areas of your ship will take damage – armor is destroyed, weapons destroyed and if a generator blows up, it takes parts of your ship with it. If a warehouse with reactor material is hit, half the ship can be on fire.
But that also applies the other way around. You can fire at enemies without special orders, or target specific areas. A destroyed generator often destroys the ship completely. If you dismantle the cockpit or the bridge, you can even take over the ship.
You steer your plane from one mission to another, collect resources, cash and reputation and expand your ship into a flying fortress. Or you rely on several ships and attack opponents with a small armada.
What else does it have to offer? There is extensive workshop support with many player-made mods and ship designs.
In addition, Cosmoteer can be played completely in co-op. Instead of going pirate hunting alone, each player has their own ship. However, rewards and achievements are shared. Even PvP is possible and you fire each other’s livelihood from under the butt.
Who is this for? If you have a creative streak and are even a marginal science fiction fan, then take a close look at Cosmoteer.
The game is currently still in Early Access and the tasks are repeated quickly. But even in its current state (December 2022), the small indie pearl can keep you busy for many hours if you enjoy constructing the spaceships. It also reminded me a bit of the raft game Raft.
Cosmoteer has been available on Steam since October 24th, 2022 and has since accumulated over 4,700 reviews. The rating is “Extremely Positive” and 96% of the reviews give the little game a thumbs up. For €19.99 you can start your own adventure.
As a fan of space action, I had no chance of getting past the title – Alicia knew that, of course. Because I played an MMORPG solo for over 1,000 hours because the setting was just perfect: I played an MMORPG solo for 1,000 hours – it was great
