A team of seniors between 62 and 69 take part in e-sports tournament – “Good for the brain”

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

In Taiwan, a group of 4 men and 1 woman between the ages of 62 and 69 took part in a League of Legends esports tournament. This happened on the initiative of a university in Taichung. The news warms the hearts of otherwise die-hard LoL players during the days off.

Why is this special?

  • Players who compete in tournaments in LoL are usually extremely young: between 16 and maybe 25 years old. When you talk about a “retiree team” in LoL, you mean that there are players who are over 25 years old.
  • When the streamer team “NNO” started in Germany in the second division, they called themselves “Retiree Team”, the players were between 24 and 31 years old. In the US, 100 Thieves are currently considered to be such a retired team because they sign veterans Bjergsen (26) and Doublelift (29). Both had actually ended their professional careers.
  • The team that played in Taiwan is indeed a phenomenon at 62-69 years old.
  • How did that come about? The team was founded by Huang Jianji, director of the Department of Multimedia Game Development and Application at Hungkuang University.

65-year-old plays 5 hours a week to prepare for tournament

One of the players says: 65-year-old Chiang Yi-Shun explains that a year ago she knew nothing about computers and never thought of doing them because she prefers to work with people. But once she started playing LoL, she felt it was good for the brain and especially good for the hands because you need to develop skill.

She now plays LoL about 5 hours a week and travels an extra hour by train to the university. There they prepared in class for the tournament.

The player says you need a certain will, you have to develop the attitude: “I don’t want to lose. I’ve been alive for quite a while now and I shouldn’t let it get to me. And I’m getting over it.”

This is what the coach of the team says: The team is coached by Ego Hsu. She says the Seniors place less of a focus on killing than other players in LoL do. It is particularly important for the trainer that her protégés do not die so often in LoL:

I think it could lead to depression if their characters are dying all the time. If their champs die fast, I blame myself for not preparing them better.

In the end, the team couldn’t win the tournament, but that was probably never the goal.

Message provides warm feelings before New Year’s Eve

What is the reaction to the message? Shortly before New Year’s Eve, that was real feel-good news for the otherwise tough LoL players. Commenter Goldenboy shared this on English Twitter:

  • Goldenboy’s post was viewed 3.7 million times, garnered 7,000 retweets and 60,000 likes
  • Everywhere the comments are very positive and boil down to: “Hopefully I’ll be as fit when I’m old”.
