Close to 500 vacant teaching jobs are currently available at the employment agency in the two northernmost counties. Large retirements and long distances in combination with industrial investments with demands for good schools are what the teachers’ union sees as major challenges in northern Sweden. Now the association wants to see a special northern investment.

The Minister of Education, Mats Persson (L), with responsibility for university and college education, is not averse to the issue:
– This is a general problem that needs to be solved with general efforts. The problem is big throughout Sweden and we are prepared to act, says Mats Persson.
