Court in Pakistan acquits rapist – marries victim

today at 15.56 Elmer Rikner

A 25-year-old man in Pakistan was sentenced in May to life imprisonment for the rape of a young deaf woman, writes The Guardian.

But after an elderly council intervened, the 25-year-old escapes punishment. This after the man and the victim’s family agreed that the man and the woman should marry.

The official document states that the compromise exists to benefit the child to the mother. The mother became pregnant as a result of the rape.

The decision has faced much criticism among groups and activists who say it legitimizes sexual violence against women in the country.
