Climate change and the lack of snow is something that worries many, including the Swedish skiing stars.
Now several of them believe that there must be a change for the sport to live on.
– The winters don’t get any longer, says biathlete Elvira Öberg.
The other day it was announced that the Tour de Ski is forced to change the schedule for this year’s competition. On New Year’s Day, a chase start was supposed to take place in Val Müstair, Switzerland, but instead it will be a mass start. This is because it snowed too little.
Swedish concerns
It is precisely the lack of snow and climate change that is causing concern among the Swedish ski stars, who believe that changes will be required to prevent the problems from becoming even greater in the future.
– The biggest challenge is what we are facing right now – the climate. The lack of snow. There, we can see with our own eyes how it changes from year to year, says William Poromaa to Dagens Nyheter.

The biathlon star Elvira Öberg filling up.
– We are a winter sport, so we need snow. And the winters won’t be straight away anymore. We also compete down in Central Europe and there is not so much winter in some places. So it will be a challenge to also do it in a sustainable way, she tells the newspaper.

“Has gotten worse”
Even the cross-country skiers Ebba Andersson and Jonna Sundling agrees with Poromaa and Öberg’s opinions, and Sundling believes that it is clearly noticeable that it has gotten worse over time.
– The climate is a challenge. Snow is a big concern. It is clear that you notice it. It has become much worse now compared to when I started skiing, says Sundling.
