Some drinks can make abdominal pain worse while others relieve it. Soda, tea, warm lemon… Here is what it is advisable to drink or not.

Depending on the cause and symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, etc.) related to stomach ache, certain drinks should be avoided so as not to accentuate the pain. What drink when you have a stomach ache?

Flat water remains the best drink in case of stomach aches. You have to rehydrate so you put on water and in case of diarrhea, with a little salt. “The ideal is to drink salted rice cooking water. In toddlers, in addition to breastfeeding or usual milk, we recommend rehydration solutions orally (ORS) in the form of a sachet for 200ml of water“says Dr. Julie Salomon, pediatrician.

What drinks to avoid in case of stomach ache?

The drinks to avoid depend first of all on the cause and the intensity of the symptoms. If you have relatively mild signs, you can try a drink that appeals to you (non-alcoholic) and see how your body reacts. In case of more severe symptoms, we remove:

  • the alcohol
  • fizzy drinks
  • sugary drinks such as soda
  • fruit juices which have a laxative and irritating effect, especially if they are citrus-based
  • caffeine and theine (except in case of constipation)

Drinking Coke in case of stomach ache is a fake good idea. “Coke is very sweet and therefore hyperosmolar and contains caffeine which accentuates the symptoms of diarrhea. It is also very acidic and irritating to the stomach.“recalls the general practitioner.

Should you drink hot water with lemon when you have a stomach ache?

“Lemon has antiseptic properties” explains the doctorbut it is not appreciated in case of stomach pains. If you have gastritis and you take lemon, it accentuates the symptoms“. So beware of sensitive stomachs!

Can you drink sparkling water when you have a stomach ache?

Carbonated drinks, including sparkling water, should be avoided during acute periods of stomach pain, in particular because this is irritating to the stomach. In addition, there are different types of sparkling water. “Some contain interesting minerals like sodium but it will be necessary to degas the water so as not to accentuate the irritation of the stomach. Others will not be recommended if they are rich in magnesium which accentuates diarrhea“says our interlocutor. Keep an eye on the labels.

Does milk reduce stomach ache?

If you have some gastro symptoms with diarrhea, the intestines are damaged temporarily in an area that will make it difficult for lactose to digest. We do not recommend milk containing lactose which can accentuate bloating and gas. In toddlers, breastfeeding or usual milk should be continued. If the diarrhea persists and after medical advice, you can go to the pharmacy to buy lactose-free infant milk” recommends the pediatrician. A medical opinion is indeed quickly recommended.

Should you drink tea when you have a stomach ache?

We avoid tea because the theine in general irritates the stomach. We prefer herbal teas. If one has rather intestinal pains, “lhas fennel tea, for example, will be well tolerated through the gut” suggests Dr. Solomon.
