LEONARDO SERIES. France 2 is launching the “Leonardo” series this Monday, February 7, which offers to paint the portrait of this brilliant artist. But are the facts told in the series faithful to historical reality?
[Mis à jour le 7 février 2022 à 20h45] Leonardo invites France 2 viewers to discover the life of Leonardo da Vinci. The series opens with the arrest of the artist, accused of the murder of his muse, Caterina da Cremona. But historians can assure you, this is a plot totally romanticized by the screenwriters: Leonardo da Vinci was never suspected of murder during his life, and Caterina da Cremona never existed.
This fictional element only serves as a trigger to launch the series, which is more dedicated to painting the portrait of Da Vinci rather than proposing a detective story. Other differences with historical reality have been pointed out by connoisseurs of the artist’s life in the various episodes of the series.
In Leonardothe title role is played by actor Aidan Turner (Poldark, The Hobbit). His muse, Caterina da Cremona (who is also a character invented by the series), is played by Matilda de Angelis (The Undoing). Note also that the actor Freddie Highmore (good doctor) was chosen to play the investigator who will solve the mystery of the death of the young woman. In the cast, viewers will also recognize James D’Arcy (Broadchurch, Agent Carter) or Giancarlo Giannini (Royal Casino). Leonardo is an 8-episode series broadcast every Monday evening on France 2 from 9:10 p.m.
