In large parts of the country, there are winter weather warnings that extend as far south as the US-Mexico border. About 240 million Americans – 70 percent of the population – are under some kind of weather warning.

Minus 48 degrees

Temperatures as low as minus 48 degrees Celsius have been measured in the United States, reports the country’s weather agency NWS. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has also declared a state of emergency for the state.

At least four people have died in the aftermath of the storm, according to Sky News. Two of the deaths occurred in weather-related car accidents, and another died without a roof over his head, according to CNN.

Canceled flights

Approximately 1.5 million residents and businesses are said to be without power, as intense winds caused damage to power lines.

Power outages have also been reported in Canada, affecting 284,000 people in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario.

In areas along the coast and by large lakes, residents also struggle with flooding.

Several major airports have canceled thousands of flights.
