“Have another home run”

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Marc Jacobs is one of the greatest western MMORPG designers ever. He was behind the success of Dark Age of Camelot and was responsible for Warhammer Online. After a few sluggish years with his new game “Camelot Unchained”, he has now managed another home run, he rejoices. And that despite being constantly told that he had to rely on crypto projects and Web3.

Who is Marc Jacobs?

  • Marc Jacobs is an old-school entrepreneur and game designer. He founded the studio Mythic Entertainment in 1995 and developed the legendary online role-playing game Dark Age of Camelot: To this day it is considered one of the best PvP MMORPGs of all time.
  • Mythic was bought by EA in 2006 and Jacobs developed the MMORPG “Warhammer Online” for the software giant, which took up many ideas from DAOC, but ultimately fell short of expectations, never realized its full potential and was discontinued in 2013.
  • Disappointed by the big corporations, Jacobs became independent in 2011 and founded the City State Entertainment studio, where he works on the crowdfunding game Camelot Unchained, a spiritual successor to Dark Age of Camelot. But for years the project was under a bad star: there was a lack of money, success and staff.

Jacobs now says: In a blog post, Jacobs compares the situation he was in most recently to Dark Age of Camelot many years ago:

  • Any publisher would have rejected DAOC back then. With the project seemingly dead and on the verge of failure, Jacobs managed to land a last-minute deal that “not only saved the company, but allowed them to create the best RVR-centric MMORPG ever made.” “.
  • This time it wasn’t quite as gloomy, but he would have hit a “home run for the studio” again.
  • what does he mean with that? Jacobs has managed to raise $15 million in new money for the development of Camelot Unchained in a round of investors. Apparently he sees that as a home run.

How shall we continue? Jacobs says the deal allows the studio to:

  • to remain independent
  • To grow at a speed never seen before
  • Like hiring crazy new people, like an extremely experienced design boss

Jacobs says he had to say no to crypto and Web3 1,000 times

Jacobs himself is particularly proud of the fact that he has said “no, no, a thousand times no” to crypto-based deals when looking for new investors and has constantly resisted jumping onto the “Web3” model.

Despite his refusal, a deal came out of it in the end.

Now he will return to what he does best: designing an MMORPG.

Camelot Unchained was in very rough waters for years. The slow development and the decision to spin off and release a game frustrated fans and caused them to lose faith in the project. It will be interesting to see whether the fresh money will really turn the tide that Jacobs promises:
