The early elections are meant to ease tensions in the country, which are the result of the ouster and arrest of President Pedro Castillo earlier this month.
The Peruvian Congress has decided to advance the elections to April 2024. Previously, the elections were supposed to be held only in 2026.

Congressmen voted 93-30 to call the election early. In addition, one representative abstained.
Congress also decided that the current president Dina Boluarte must hand over power to the winner of the election by July 2024.
Peru declared the Mexican ambassador a person not wanted
Peru has declared that the ambassador of Lima, Mexico, is “persona non grata”, i.e. a person not wanted, and gave him 72 hours to leave the country, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru.
Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said on Tuesday that the family of ousted President Pedro Castillo had been granted asylum and were placed in the Mexican embassy in Lima awaiting permission to travel abroad.
Peru’s Supreme Court has ordered that ousted President Pedro Castillo remain in pretrial detention for 1.5 years before his trial.
Castillo’s actions are being investigated as at least an attempted revolution and a rebellion.
At least 26 people have died in the demonstrations supporting Castillo, which have already lasted a couple of weeks.
