Troubled Peru brings forward elections
Peru’s Congress has voted to bring forward the next election from 2026 to April 2024 in an attempt to ease political tensions in the country.
According to the new timetable, the recently appointed president Dina Boluarte is to hand over power to the winner in July 2024.
Widespread and violent protests rock Peru after former president Pedro Castillo was ousted and imprisoned in early December. He had then tried to dissolve parliament.
