When Peter Forsberg invented his characteristic weapon – and used a Russian as a guinea pig: “I was pissed off”

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Peter Forsberg is, of course, known for many things.
One of them is his adamant open tackles.
In the hockey podcast Spittin’ Chiclets, “Foppa” now tells about when he “figured out” his tackling technique, and how a poor Russian player got to experience what it was like to be tackled by Forsberg.

Peter Forsberg’s repertoire can be considered broad to say the least. As you know, the Swede was good at most things, and his enormous skills have made him one of Sweden’s most prominent ice hockey players of all time.

Rock hard Foppa

“Foppa” was not only brilliant at scoring goals and assists, but also possessed physical qualities that made him difficult for opposing players to handle. And at regular intervals you could also see when Forsberg handed out rock-hard tackles, both in the defensive and offensive zone.

He had something of a patented and classic style of tackling, a style he “figured out” during a Junior World Cup during a match against Russia.
– It was in the JVM against Russia, and I was almost a little surprised and thought “why did it work so well?”, says Peter Forsberg in the hockey podcast Spittin’ Chiclets.

“Got a little pissed off”

Many of the players who fell victim to those types of tackles were likely surprised, as Foppa, by his own admission, was discreet when deploying his pushers.
– You had to be a bit sneaky and a bit discreet about how you will deploy the tackle, and that was probably a bit of my speciality, he says.
– I tried to check the puck at the same time as I saw in the periphery that the opponent was coming, and then I just drove straight at him.

The Russian player who had to receive the tackle during the JVM did not take it calmly and got really angry.
– That Russian gave me a “spearing” and got a little pissed off, says Foppa.
