Cyril Ramaphosa re-elected as South Africa’s leader

Now it is clear that Cyril Ramaphosa, 70, remains as leader of South Africa’s ruling party ANC – and thus as the country’s president. This despite a long period of conflict and internal strife.

Ramaphosa won the ANC leadership battle with 2,476 votes to Zweli Mkhize’s 1,897, according to the party’s chief electoral officer.

Görrel Espelund, journalist and former correspondent in South Africa, believes that this means a certain stability for the country, which is, among other things, in a deep electricity crisis.

– It means some stability, a little breathing space for Cyril Ramaphosa, she says.
