A lawyer representing several imprisoned journalists and activists in Iran has been arrested, the Iranian newspaper Ham-Mihan reports.

It is about Mohammad Ali Kamfirouzi who, among other things, represented the two imprisoned female journalists Niloofar Hamedi and Elahe Mohammadi – who were among the first to report on the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Zhina Amini and who now risk the death penalty.

Tens of thousands of people have been arrested during the nationwide protests sparked by the death of 22-year-old Amini in Iranian moral police custody on September 16.

According to Ham-Mihan, so far around 25 lawyers have been arrested in connection with the protests. Kamfirouzi’s lawyer states that he was not aware of the charges against him.

According to the Iranian figures, more than 200 people – including tens of members of the security forces – have been killed in the protests, which the authorities call “riots”.

However, the Norway-based organization Iran Human Rights (IHR) points out that Iran’s security forces have killed at least 469 people in the protests. In addition, eleven people have been sentenced to death and two have already been executed.
