An aquarium more than 10 meters high broke early Friday morning in a leisure center in Berlin, Germany.

About 1,500 fish lost their homes when a million liters of water from the aquarium spilled onto the street and into the lobby of a hotel in the center. In addition to the marine destruction, two people were injured by broken glass, the Berlin police said on Twitter.

According to the authorities, the streets near the accident site had to be closed due to massive leaks and the residents of the hotel were evacuated in case of structural damage.

– Just chaos. The entire aquarium exploded and was left with complete destruction. Lots of dead fish and junk, hotel guest Sandra Weeser told news agency Reuters.

The reason for the breach was not immediately known to the authorities on Friday. According to information from the AP news agency, there was speculation at the scene that the cold temperature had contributed to the tank breaking.

In the morning, more than a hundred rescue workers were alerted to a building located in the Mitte district in case of a possible major accident.

Neither the police nor the fire department have commented on the fate of the fish.
