The European Union (EU) Chief Prosecutor’s Office demanded that the immunity of the two Greek MPs of the European Parliament be lifted due to a new suspicion of corruption linked to the European Parliament (EP).
In the statement made by the EU Attorney General’s Office, it was stated that one of the Greek MPs whose immunity was requested to be lifted is Eva Kaili, one of the focus of the investigation that has been going on for a while in Belgium.

The other Greek MP was announced to be Maria Spyraki from the European People’s Party (EPP).
An investigation report from the EU Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) reported that there was a suspicion of corruption involving misuse of the EU budget.
It was noted that the issue of corruption was linked to parliamentary allowances for wages paid to assistants working in parliament.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Eva Kaili, along with her partner Francesco Giorgi, who also works as an assistant to the EP, was detained last week in the ongoing EP-related corruption investigation in Belgium. Hundreds of thousands of euros in cash were seized at Eva Kaili’s home. In the leaked statement of Giorgi to the press, it was stated that he admitted to managing the cash flow in the corruption organization.
In addition to Kaili and Giorgi, former Italian MP of the EP Pier Antonio Panzeri and the director of a non-governmental organization working on rule of law, Niccolo Figa-Talamanca, are also in custody as part of this investigation. (AA)
