This December 14 is released in theaters in France one of the films, if not the most anticipated film of the year: ” Avatar: The Waterway “. Thirteen years later Avatar “, the first opus which had broken all records – it is even the biggest success in the history of world cinema with 3 billion dollars in revenue – James Cameron delivers this long-awaited sequel. ” Avatar : The Way of the Water takes place again in the future on a distant planet, the planet Pandora, where an indigenous, blue-skinned humanoid people live in harmony with nature. The danger comes from the human species which wants to destroy everything out of greed. Like the first, this 3D film establishes technological prowess while delivering an ecological message.
Thirteen years have passed since the first film Avatar. But on Pandora, time flies even faster. Jake, the hero of the first film who has become a Na’vi in his own right, has founded a family and lives in harmony with the luxuriant nature. But the predatory humans are back, determined to exploit the resources of this magnificent planet, the Earth becoming uninhabitable. James Cameron delivers again to the spectators an ecological message.
” Everything shown in the film exists on Earth. All over the world, indigenous peoples are under pressure, the lands on which they live are taken over by polluting industries or victims of deforestation. This is the case in Brazil, where trees are cut to plant soybeans that will be eaten by cattle. We are losing all this cultural wealth, this biodiversity, why ? One more cow ? It is absurd. If a film can open minds, alert consciences and inspire us to change… There may be a small effect on viewers. Avatar attracts people with the story, the beauty of the images, the action and the adventure and in the process invites you to reflect on your way of life. »
Jake flees the forest with his wife and children. The refugees will seek asylum from the people of the water. James Cameron must have asked new questions.
” How you ride a sea creature ? They are not dolphins… We are talking about a species that does not exist. How you ride it while holding a gun ? So we didn’t just draw these creatures. We tested a lot of ways to animate them with stuntmen. We are talking about animals that can dive into the water at high speed, turn around very quickly, come out of the water, also fly and dive again. How do we do ? »
Unprecedented technical innovations
James Cameron still uses 3D and the technique of catch performance : real actresses, like Kate Winslet, Zoe Soldana or Sigourney Weaver play the scenes equipped with sensors, and then everything is recomposed by computer, so that they are unrecognizable and disappear behind the synthetic characters.
” I guided the technical team on the innovations that we had to design… It’s one thing to solve technical problems. But it’s another thing to tell actors who’ve never dived before that they’re going to have to hold their breath for 5 minutes. With practice, anyone can do it. Kate Winslet surprised herself at 7:30 minutes. Sigourney Weaver reached 6:30 minutes. Actors love to try new things ! »
James Cameron hopes that this spectacular, visually stunning film will achieve the wide success that will allow him to peacefully conceive the three new films in the saga.
