At least 100 people are feared to have died in the heavy floods and subsequent landslides that hit Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Rescue workers continue the search for dead. Most victims are in poor areas where whole families have fallen victim, when houses have collapsed.
– I can’t find my one child. I’m a poor woman doing my best but where do I go? I have lost almost everything, even the clothes and everything I was wearing, says one victim.
The megacity Kinshasa is poorly equipped to deal with the extreme weather that has become more common due to climate change.
In the city of 15 million people, shantytowns are growing on the slopes, without adapting foundation work and drainage. Around twelve million people are said to live in the 24 districts that have now been affected by floods.
