Several films, five series and then Stargate was over. The successful science fiction series has been idle for years. Since the series has changed hands in the meantime, rumors of a revival are increasing. But is there a film, a series or both? We clarify the status of developments.
Amazon reportedly has big plans for Stargate
The last major series, Stargate Universe, was canceled in 2011 and ended on a massive cliffhanger. After that came Stargate Origins, a prequel series with ten-minute episodes. A lot has happened behind the scenes since then.
In 2021, the Amazon group bought the traditional studio MGM, which owns the rights to Stargate. Concrete plans for the series about interstellar travel with portals were not announced afterwards. Last week, however, two separate reports appeared about the
Future of Stargate on Amazon.
Message 1: There is said to be a Stargate movie coming
One report comes from Giant Freakin Robot, who have made several reports in the past that later turned out to be correct. Therefore Amazon is planning a new Stargate movie. However, it is not known whether this has any relation to the series in which MacGyver star Richard Dean Anderson and Aquaman Jason Momoa played, among others.

The report also reveals whether the film will be sent to the Origin of the Sci-Fi series to follow, namely Roland Emmerich’s 1994 feature film Stargate, starring James Spader and Kurt Russell. Since that success, the two stars have had nothing to do with the series, while their characters lived on in Stargate SG-1. However, there is no confirmation from other parties.
Message 2: Amazon is looking for ideas, including from The Expanse team
The second message comes from the YouTube show State of the Gate (via Gateworld). It featured film marketing expert Jenny Stiven and revealed the following:
Amazon Creative Studios has called on production companies to present pitches for films, series and the like, without a specific focus on Stargate.
A Stargate project from the team behind one of the best sci-fi series of recent years? That would probably be the one dream of many fans. Other names associated with pitching Stargate include producers from The Boys and JJ Abrams’ company Bad Robot.
The same applies here: There is no confirmation of this report either from the official side or from recognized industry publications such as the Hollywood Reporter or Variety.
The head of the Stargate series doesn’t sound optimistic
For now, fans shouldn’t wait for a sequel to Brad Wright’s serial universe to hope. The co-creator of Stargate SG-1, Atlantis and Universe spoke on Reddit a few days ago. In a question and answer session he explained:
I’m sure MGM and Amazon will do something with the franchise. I’m less sure I’ll have anything to do with it. A few years ago, MGM reached out to me about developing a script for a pilot, but so much has changed since then, including the people involved. Amazon probably views Stargate as a blockbuster franchise, and that’s taking a while. I wish you all the best.

So who was hoping that the Cliffhanger at the end of Stargate Universe gets a live-action resolution is likely to be disappointed. After all, the story was continued in a comic book series called Back to Destiny, in which Wright was not involved.
The reports and statements so far indicate two things: Amazon wants to bring back Stargate, but it could mean a hard cut within the series.
