The 11th edition of the Partcours ended on Sunday December 11, 2022 in Dakar. This artistic festival takes place in 30 places in Dakar and its suburbs each year to bring the Dakar cultural scene to life. The Partcours offers for example to discover Dakar differently with architectural walks. Carole Diop guided groups of curious people in the Plateau, the historic center of the Senegalese capital.

This Sunday morning, a small group strolls through the empty streets of central Dakar, their eyes raised towards the buildings. ” This morning, we are in front of the Kermel market. This is not the original building, it dates from 1910 “, explains Carole Diop architect. She guides the group to discover the architectural heritage of the city. Lots of colonial buildings, but other currents. ” We have neo-classical style, Art Deco, post-modern African architecture “, adds the architect.
For the people of Dakar, it’s an opportunity to discover their city in a different way: ” It is quite difficult in Dakar to have access to the history of Dakar. It’s good to have visits like this to go a little further and understand the city a little “says a visitor. “ I discover Dakar from a new angle “, admires another.
Dakar’s architecture is constantly changing and Carole Diop is also trying to raise awareness. ” In ten years, everything on that square will disappear. There are already projects: at the level of the Allumettes building, there will be the Axa tower. Heritage has unfortunately been in danger in recent years. This is a way for me to raise awareness of this issue. »
Carole’s architectural walks also take place throughout the rest of the year.
It allows you to shed some light on spaces that are sometimes a little hidden, a little concealed and to expose what artists do best.
